Big Dreams Through Small Steps has launched Bridge Abilities, a transformative initiative dedicated to supporting children with disabilities by fostering inclusion, providing essential equipment, and creating opportunities for connection. The initiative aims to ensure that children with disabilities are seen, valued, understood, and given the necessary resources to thrive.
The inspiration behind Bridge Abilities comes from Sophia Sharypov, a sophomore at Lakewood Ranch High School, and her twin sister, Maria, who was born with cerebral palsy and cannot walk or talk. Sophia grew up witnessing the world's indifference toward children like Maria and her sister's immense strength in the face of daily challenges. This personal experience shaped Sophia’s vision to create a movement that provides tangible support and advocates for a more inclusive society.
"Our single mother gave us a happy childhood despite the hardships, but as I grew older, I realized the stark difference in the paths ahead for Maria and me. I would go to college, start a career, and build a life full of opportunities. But what about Maria? What about kids like her who are often left behind, misunderstood, and alone?" said Sophia. “This realization drove me to create this initiative out of love and a desire to change the world for Maria and other children like her. We aim to build a place where children with disabilities are not just seen but understood, celebrated, and embraced.”
According to Sophia, “Bridge Abilities is about more than just connection—it’s also about action. We recognize that many children with disabilities lack access to essential equipment, making daily life even more challenging. That’s why we also serve as a bridge for families to donate gently used mobility aids, communication devices, and other adaptive equipment to those in need. By giving these tools a second life, we ensure that every child, regardless of their circumstances, has the support they deserve.”
Upon being introduced to Sophia, Misty Ritch, the founder of Big Dreams Through Small Steps, offered to help Sophia reach her dream. “Meeting Sophia and hearing her passion for creating a more inclusive world was truly inspiring. Her love for her sister and her dedication to ensuring that children with disabilities have the opportunities and support they deserve align perfectly with the mission of Big Dreams Through Small Steps. Through Bridge Abilities, we are honored to help Sophia turn her vision into reality—breaking down barriers, providing essential resources, and creating a future where every child, regardless of ability, has the chance to prosper.”
A generous donation by Ritch Ventures kicked off the initiative. According to Robert Ritch, “At Ritch Ventures, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential, regardless of their challenges. Supporting Bridge Abilities is not just about providing resources—it’s about ensuring that children with disabilities have the same access to independence, connection, and opportunity as anyone else. We are proud to help launch this initiative and build a future where every child is empowered to dream, achieve, and thrive."
A key component of the initiative is its equipment donation program, which connects families with gently used mobility aids, communication devices, and adaptive equipment. This ensures that children with disabilities receive the essential tools they need, regardless of financial barriers. Applications for the requested equipment are now open. Then, Bridge Abilities will work on trying to fulfill the children's needs to build independence in their daily lives.
The initiative is more than just a program—it is a movement to honor the spirit of children who refuse to be defined by their disabilities. Through advocacy, action, and community support, Bridge Abilities seeks to build bridges where there were once walls, ensuring that every child, regardless of ability, has the chance to dream, thrive, and belong.
Donations of gently used equipment will be accepted, as well as monetary donations.
"Your donations enable us to continue our mission of supporting disabled children and creating a more inclusive society. Together, we can make a profound difference in the lives of these children, ensuring they have the resources and opportunities they deserve," Sophia added.
