Big Dreams Through Small Steps, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering children and families through education and community engagement, has officially launched its latest initiative: the AQUAlibrium Drowning Prevention Program. This life-saving program aims to match eligible children with local swim providers to offer free swim lessons, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn essential water safety skills.
Drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death in young children, particularly in Florida, where access to pools and waterways is abundant. The AQUAlibrium program is designed to combat this alarming statistic by providing accessible swim education to families who might otherwise be unable to afford it.
“We believe that every child deserves the chance to learn how to swim,” said Misty Ritch, Big Dreams Through Small Steps founder. “Swimming isn’t just a fun activity—it’s a critical life skill that can prevent tragedies and build confidence in our children. With AQUAlibrium, we’re not just teaching kids to swim; we’re empowering them with knowledge that could save their lives.”
The program will partner with certified swim instructors and facilities across Manatee County to provide high-quality, professional lessons at no cost to families. Eligibility will be determined based on income levels and other qualifying factors, ensuring the program reaches those most in need.
Parents and guardians interested in enrolling their children in the AQUAlibrium Drowning Prevention Program can visit the Big Dreams Through Small Steps website for more information on eligibility and enrollment. The nonprofit is also seeking additional swim providers and sponsors to expand the program’s reach and impact.
“Our goal is to eliminate barriers to water safety education,” Misty Ritch added. “Through partnerships with local swim schools and generous community support, we can make a real difference in reducing childhood drownings and fostering a safer environment for all.”
